Prosecutor orders further review of events of July 1, 2008

State Prosecutor General D.Dorligjav has ordered additional investigation into the events of July 1, 2008, which resulted in the deaths of five people.

The State Prosecutors’ General Office’s Investigation Department is checking into the police officials who gave the order to open fire on demonstrators. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Ulaanbaatar Prosecutors’ Office.

Initially, senior officials, including the head of the General Police Authority, Maj-Gen. Ch.Amarbold, the head of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Mr. O.Zorigt, and the head of the Public Discipline Department, Mr. Sh.Batsukh, were investigated for abuse of power and causing massive damage. If they were to be convicted, the officials would be sentenced to five to ten years in prison. Our correspondent spoke with Ts.Enkhbayar, the father of a young man killed on July 1, 2008. Ts.Enkhbayar said the investigation of the police officials was reopened on November 11, 2010, following complaints from families of the victims.

Investigators have been going over their files for a year, and family members of the victims have introduced their own statements.
