President’s Office updates anti-alcohol campaign

D.Battulga, the head of the President’s Office, updated journalists on the office’s work on Wednesday.

He reminded journalists that President Ts.Elbegdorj appealed for the “Together for Mongolia without Alcohol” program when he took part in the Burte Chono awards ceremony on December 24, 2010. D.Battulga said the office has implemented some works relating to the program.

D.Battulga said MNT 59.7 billion has been collected from the alcohol excise tax through the end of November 2011, according to the National Taxation General Office. He noted that the amount was MNT 1.3 billion lower than in the same period in 2010.

The 2012 budget projects revenues of MNT 63 billion from the alcohol excise tax and Battulga said lawmakers should be careful about projecting increases in alcohol consumption.

Battulga said the President’s Office has banned alcohol at banquets, which has reduced the office’s expenses considerably. He appealed to state and private organization to follow suit. Battulga also appealed to the public to observe the New Year without consuming alcohol.

He added that the office has worked to raise awareness of alcohol’s harmful effects in ten aimags and it plans to continue that effort.
