A look at the XV Annual Conference of United Association for Mongolian Journalists
On December 10, the XV Annual Conference of the United Association for Mongolian Journalists was held.
At this year’s conference, over 500 journalists and media figures were present, including the president of the United Association for Mongolian Journalists T. Baasansuren, New Era Creative Thinking union leader, NBS television columnist B. Naranbaatar, Director of the Mongolian National Broadcaster Ts. Oyundari, State Emeritus Sh. Gurbazar and dozens of television, newspaper, website and various other media outlet’s administrators, journalists and columnists.
They discussed and proposed many ideas. Journalists have criticized what they see as a violation of freedom of speech, and the freedom of journalism, and voiced the need to build a labour union to protect the rights of journalists.
They claimed that journalism is fundamental for protecting the rights of people and the guarantee to a healthy society, but they themselves have no protection or voice to protect their own rights. Although the United Association for Mongolian Journalists is operational, they have not executed any substantial move to protect the rights of journalists.
T. Baasasuren said that journalism in Mongolia has become corrupted by politician’s direct payments, which initiates endless social issues that cannot be solved.
Journalist N. Batbaatar of the Today newspaper commented, “The only field not restructured in the past 22 years of democracy is journalism and our United Association. Due to the ineffectiveness of this association and its inability to make crucial decisions, many journalists are out of their jobs. Since they are not doing anything about protecting journalists’ rights, we should reorganize this organization immediately.”
