PM meets with representatives of striking teachers

Prime Minister S.Batbold received representatives of the Trade Union of Education, Culture and Science at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Education, Culture and Science Minister Yo.Otgonbayar and Social Welfare and Labor Minister T.Gandi also attended the meeting.

The teachers’ representatives said the teachers have five demands, including two salary increases, increased funding per student, addressing social issues, and an amendment to the law on education.

S.Batbold said the Government places special importance on education, and the state is investing heavily in it as the main engine of social development. He said 33 percent of the budget is being spent in the education sector. He added that the Government has prepared an amendment to the law on education and MPs have also prepared their own version of an amendment.

The premier explained that two salary increases are not possible because that would increase inflation. He also noted that the Employers’ United Association has criticized raises for state workers because 70 percent of the labor market is in the private sector.

He said a working group is being established. It will include Finance Minister S.Bayartsogt, Education, Culture and Science Minister Yo.Otgonbayar, and Social Welfare and Labor Minister T.Gandi. The working group will hold talks with teachers’ representatives.

T.Gandi said that the working group will start talks immediately and that the strike should be stopped.

N.Batsukh, the head of the Trade Union of Education, Culture and Science, stated that representatives will discuss the issue with teachers and announce their decision soon.
