UN Assembly approves project suggested by Mongolia

A project proposed by Mongolia was approved at a meeting of the third committee of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on October 13. The project is called “The Role of Cooperatives in Social Development.”

The UN has proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, to recognize “that the cooperative business model is a major factor of economic and social development.” Mongolia’s project involves encouraging the governments of various nations to collaborate on issues relating to cooperatives, paying special attention to women’s issues.

Delegates from 67 countries took part in the discussion of Mongolia’s proposal.
