Mongolia tallies its rivers and lakes
A census of Mongolia’s rivers, lakes, wells, and springs has been completed. It was undertaken by officials from the Water Board, Ulaanbaatar Nature Protection Office, and district governors’ offices, under the direction of the National Security Council. The law on water requires such a census every four years.
A total of 6,646 rivers were counted in the country, 6,095 of which have water and 551 of which are dry.
A total of 3,613 lakes were counted, 3,130 of which have water and 483 of which are dry.
A total of 9,320 springs were counted, 7,441 of which have water and 1,879 of which are dry. Mongolia has 30 oases, most of which are located from the Altai Mountains to the eastern steppes. A total of 225 permanent snowcaps.
