Standing committee discusses draft laws

The Standing Committee on Justice discussed draft laws on the regulation of public officials and on anti-corruption on Tuesday. The members decided the issues should be discussed by a working group.

The draft law on the regulation of public officials is aimed at curbing conflicts of interest, such as the improper intervention of state officials on behalf of private interests. The draft law on anti-corruption is aimed at preventing corruption, and increasing transparency and fairness in the activities of the state.

If passed, the laws would ban, limit, or regulate some private activities of state officials. They would also prohibit the defamation and libel of state officials without definite evidence.

Members had different opinions on the issue of conflicts of interests. Ts.Sukhbaatar, the sponsor of the draft law on the regulation of public officials, said that if an official believes that he or she has a conflict of interest regarding a particular issue, he or she should inform the appropriate authorities.
