President Ts.Elbegdorj begins official visit to Italy
President Ts.Elbegdorj’s official visit to Italy began with a welcome ceremony in Rome on Monday.
After the ceremony, Ts.Elbegdorj and his Italian counterpart, G.Napolitano, held extended talks and then a signing ceremony. Among the officials attending the signing ceremony were Foreign Minister G.Zandanshatar, Mongolian Ambassador to Austria J.Enkhsaikhan, Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Minister T.Badamjunai, several MPs, Ts.Elbegdorj’s Foreign Policy Advisor L.Purevsuren, Italian Foreign Minister Franko Frattini, Secretary General of the Italian President Donata Marra, Head of the Italian President’s Office Karlo Guelfi, and Foreign Policy Advisor of the Italian President Stefano Stefanini.
Ts.Elbegdorj stated that the two nations will hold more talks to further bilateral relations. He said that Mongolia and Italy have an ancient tradition of relations, and Mongolia wants to expand collaboration between the two countries in all possible spheres. He said cooperation in the agriculture, wool, cashmere, and leather sectors has already been successful. He said Mongolia would like to export leather, wool, and cashmere products to the world market with the assistance of Italian technology. He also thanked the Italian government for assisting the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in implementing agricultural programs in Mongolia.
The signing of a memorandum of support for cooperating in the development of small and medium-sized businesses is a significant event of the official visit. The President also announced that a Mongolian-Italian business forum will be held in Milan.
President G.Napolitano wished Ts.Elbegdorj success on his official visit and noted that the visit opens a new page in the two countries’ relations. He said that the two nations have many possible areas of cooperation. Italy has had success in supporting small and medium-sized businesses, and he said Italy would assist Mongolia by sharing information and technology in that area. Particularly, he said the countries could exchange specialists in the wool and cashmere sectors. He suggested that the Italian brand Bella brand could produce goods from Mongolian cashmere.
The two sides agreed that opening a Mongolian embassy opening in Rome improves their ability to cooperate. Officials also exchanged opinions on bilateral, international, and regional issues.
