35th anniversary of border agreement marked
Wednesday marked the 35th anniversary of an historic border agreement between Mongolia and Russia.
The border between Mongolia and Russia was first established in 1727. Mongolia and China concluded a border agreement in 1962, establishing the border between the two countries at 4,709 km.
On October 19, 1976, Mongolia and Russia (then known as the Soviet Union) signed a new border agreement. Yu.Tsedenbal, secretary general of the MPRP of the Mongolian People’s Republic, and L.I. Brejnev, secretary general of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, signed the document.
The agreement established the border between Mongolia and Russia at 2,480 km. The agreement was revised in 1987, and the borderline was extended by 56 km between 1987 and 2002.
Mongolia’s borders with Russia and China now measure a total of 8,550 km.
