Ts.Batbayar: Number of MPs from Ulaanbaatar should not be decreased
MPs from Ulaanbaatar oppose the MPP’s proposed “48-28” election structure, because it would reduce the number of MPs elected from the capital.
Our correspondent asked MP Ts.Batbayar about the proposal. He said it was wrong, because Ulaanbaatar MPs were not appointed to the working group that came up with the proposal.
He also said MPs elected from local settlements already have disproportionate representation. For example, he said he was elected from an electoral district in Ulaanbaatar with 330,000 people, while four MPs were elected from an electoral district in Khuvsgul with 127,000 people.
He said MPs from Ulaanbaatar already represent a large number of people, which is why the number of MPs from the capital should not be diminished. He also said it would be unfair to reduce the representation of Ulaanbaatar when half the country lives in the capital.
