Working-age population lose interest in working
Participants of the Second Economic Research Forum, recently held in Ulaanbaatar on July 2 and 3, stressed that the negative tendency in Mongolia’s labor market needs to be changed and long-term policy must be formulated for its recovery.
Based on a study based on the Mongolian Population and Housing Census conducted by economic researchers at the National University of Mongolia, the working-age population’s interest in work has been weakened. Sixty-two percent of the working-age population was employed in 2000 while the percentage decreased to 56.4 in 2010.
Between 2002 and 2003, employment of working-age women was at 61.1 percent, while men’s employment was rather high at 69.7 percent. But in 2010, working-age men’s employment fell to 67.2 percent while women’s employment was at 56.2 percent.
Based on the results of the study, researchers concluded that the Mongolian working-age population’s interest in work has weakened.
The study showed that the employment rate was at its highest between 2007 and 2008, while the period with lowest rate was in 2010. It also suggested that residents of the provinces are more interested in working than residents in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.
