Selbe river recovery project temporarily halted

A project to increase the flow of the Selbe River and upgrade its surrounding area began two years ago. For the project covering 1.3 km, 7.7 billion MNT was budgeted. Yet, the project is far from completion two years later. Below is an interview with D.Delgermaa, supervising engineer of Ulaanbaatar City Investment Authority, regarding the matter.

-Why has the project been halted?

-During construction work, a flood water diversion channel fell out of operation, and also, the required funding for covering pavement with natural stones, as well as Selbe River bank upgrade projects haven’t been provided for us, slowing the project’s progress.

-I heard the project design was faulty. Is this true?

-Yes, as it was faulty, we made quite a lot of changes to it. Soil water was above required levels and a sewer pipeline which wasn’t included in the design, came up during construction. At that time, the bridge at Zuun Ail wasn’t planned for renovation, but when it was decided we also had to change our design.

-Which company is executing the project?

-Ulaanbaatar Design Institute and Usny Erchim company have cooperated on the 70 million MNT project.

-What is the progress of the project now?

-Currently, the project is at 80 percent completion.

-I heard additional funding is required for the project. How much exactly?

-Executor companies requested an additional one billion MNT for the project. But in the beginning they stated two billion MNT is enough for repairing 350 meters of road between Zuun Ail bridge and Golden Villa apartment town as well as upgrade work. So we will not provide any additional funding.

-When is the project expected to finish?

-The 350 meter road repair and upgrade work along it will be completed in
