MPs send query to minister about fuel price increase
On Monday, MPs S.Byambatsogt and J.Sukhbaatar sent a query to Mineral Resources and Energy Minister D.Zorigt about rising fuel prices.
The MPs said a liter of A-80 gasoline now costs MNT 1,550, AI-92 MNT 1,850, AI-95 MNT 2,000, and diesel MNT 1,885. They said the high prices are having a negative impact on public transportation and the price of consumer goods. The MPs said citizens are unhappy with the situation and may begin stockpiling fuel, which would lead to shortages. The MPs said they sent the query in accordance with the law on parliament to ask member of the Government and Mineral Resources and Energy Minister D.Zorigt for an explanation.
The query asks the minister to explain why fuel prices in Mongolia have risen since August 2011, while Russia has not increased its petroleum price or export tax.
The MPs also ask:
If there is a correlation between rising fuel prices and Mongol Bank’s U.S. dollar rate increase.
Whether, in violation of the law on fair competitiveness, petroleum importers have conspired to raise fuel prices without reason. The minister is asked to comment on enforcement of the law on fair competitiveness.
The costs of consumer goods and services increase along with fuel prices. But inflation also raises fuel prices, and the minister is asked how to stop inflation.
Remote cities and regions have big differences in fuel prices. The minister is asked what price remote settlements will pay for fuel.
The minister is asked to comprehensively report on state organizations monitoring gasoline and diesel prices in the state. What measures can state organizations take and what legislation is necessary to improve monitoring of these prices? MPs requested Minister D.Zorigt to reply within the time prescribed by the law on parliament.
