Speaker receives demonstrators
On Monday, Speaker D.Demberel and Chief of the Standing Committee on Economics D.Zorigt received representatives of the Confederation of Trade Unions (CTU) demonstrators protesting price increases in the country.
D.Demberel stated that the officials understood that the increase in gasoline prices was not justified, and he commended the CTU for fighting the increase. But he noted that the demonstrators should understand that the Government and Parliament are taking action to regulate prices. For instance, he said, Mongol Bank has organized a foreign currency auction, and the Standing Committee on Economics is investigating the increase.
“Parliament has discussed the gasoline price increase three times,” said the Speaker. “That is why demonstration should be stopped.”
CTU President S.Ganbaatar said rising gas prices are “really worsening people’s living standards,” and he said trade unions are fighting to protect citizens’ interests.
“This is not a political fight,” S.Ganbaatar said. “It is an economic fight.”
After the meeting, S.Ganbaatar said the CTU is suspending the demonstration.
