President meets with Khanbogd soum residents

During his visit to Umnugobi aimag, President Ts.Elbegdorj met with Khanbogd soum residents to hear their suggestions and complaints and to answer their questions.

Local residents raised the issue of electricity shortages in the soum.

G.Batsukh, the head of the Oyutolgoi mining project’s Representative Managing Council, said that a power line being constructed between Oyutolgoi and Khanbogd soum will be finished in the autumn at cost of MNT 5.9 billion.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister D.Zorigt said that another power line is being built from Mandalgobi soum to Tavantolgoi, and another is planned from Tavantolgoi to Khanbogd. Also, 300-megawatt power plants will be built in Oyutolgoi and Tavantolgoi. Before the plants are built, the aimag will import electricity from China.

Citizens also raised concerns about pollution and water shortages.

Herders noted that pastureland has been damaged and urged the building of new roads in the Gobi region. They asked about provisions in the Oyutolgoi agreement focusing on soum development. Herders also stated their concerns about the agriculture and animal husbandry sectors, and asked officials to pay special attention to them.

Citizens demanded speedy construction of an oil refinery because, they said, petroleum importers have pressured the country with high fuel prices and a monopoly.

Citizens noted that the Oyutolgoi project’s implementation has not focused on improving the living standards of local residents. They also requested improved medical services in the soum.

Ts.Elbegdorj stated that the economic benefits of mineral resources should be shared to improve living standards in the soum.

At the meeting it was decided that managing officials of the Oyutolgoi project will meet with soum residents on a monthly basis to discuss issues affecting the citizens.
