Creation of the Constitution remembered

On January 13, a 20th anniversary banquet was held paying tribute to the deputies who were part of the Great Democratic Conference.

20 years ago, The Mongolian Great Democratic Conference, consisting of 430 deputies, held numerous conferences over the course of three months eventually crafting the Democratic Constitution of Mongolia.
Mongolia’s first President P. Ochirbat, current President Ts. Elbegdorj and the Prime Minister, S. Batbold shared their thoughts and opinions on the historic moment in Mongolian history.

Parliament speaker D. Demberel said, “Our constitution has led to Mongolia’s worldwide development, changed our society, and formed the shape of our great nation. The quality of the Constitution shows us that it still continues to take us upward in our development. The Constitution was discussed and formed in the duration of nearly three months, with over 200 thousand individuals sending in suggestions and ideas throughout its creation. The Constitution was formed of our people’s voices, views, and opinions. This guarantees its continued effectiveness as a genuine democratic Constitution in the future.”

D. Demberel went on to mention that in the past 20 years the people of Mongolia have become increasingly aware of their own rights and as of today fully acknowledge their roles, rights, and responsibilities in the democratic society.

He did not hesitate to say that there have also been negative effects of democracy – corruption and bureaucracy being a few of the examples.

He encouraged Mongolians to push for further success and economic growth.
