Japan, Mongolia to step up economic cooperation
Japan and Mongolia have agreed to step up economic cooperation, including the development of natural resources such as rare earth metals, as the two Asian countries prepare for possible free trade talks next year.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj signed a joint statement pledging to work together on infrastructure construction, resource development and cultural exchanges.
The two nations also agreed to speed up preliminary studies before possibly entering formal negotiations next year on a free trade agreement.
Japan has adopted a more aggressive policy of promoting free trade in a bid to stay competitive with regional rivals.
