Hakuho wins 17th title at Kyushu sumo
Grand champion Hakuho of Mongolia defeated Toyonoshima in a playoff to win the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday.
Both wrestlers won their first bouts on the final day of competition to finish at 14-1 and force an extra deciding bout.
Hakuho spun Toyonoshima around after the faceoff and shoved him out to claim his 17th Emperor's Cup.
Ninth-ranked maegashira Toyonoshima was bidding to become the first Japanese wrestler to win the title since former ozeki Tochiazuma won Emperor's Cup in 2006.
