Photos: Rare Mute Swans spotted in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
It's been quite a week for rare birds in China! First the elusive blackthroated blue robin was spotted in the Northwest, and now it's breeding season for rare Mute Swans, seen here courting on the surface of Wuliangsuhai Fresh Lake in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Since becoming a protected species, the swan population has staged a comeback, growing to about 600 couples.
Their relative, the Whooper Swan, has also been thriving under government protection, as increasing numbers have been spotted congregating in Pinglu County, Shanxi province each winter.
