Missing man set to get medal

Paul Weeks will be honoured with a military service medal at a memorial service in Christchurch, his family has been told.

Weeks, who went missing on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in March, served in the New Zealand Army for more than five years. In 2011 the army introduced the New Zealand Defence Service Medal, recognising staff who served more than three years since the end of World War II.

Weeks' wife, Danica, yesterday said she was told by the New Zealand Consulate her husband, and father to their two boys, was eligible for a service medal.

Paul Weeks served in the army between 1993 and 1999 as a vehicle mechanic based at Burnham Military Camp before embarking on a career as an engineer.

He had recently started work at Transwest Mongolia as a supervisor for its engineering projects and was travelling to Mongolia for his first shift away from home when the flight departing from Kuala Lumpur went missing.

Danica Weeks said she was still undecided when a memorial service would be held and was "back at square one" after extensive searches for the missing plane had failed to produce evidence of any wreckage.

"It's truly bizarre," she said.
