Genghis Khan “invades” Singapore

This is the first time that this extensive exhibition will be on show in Asia and its ArtScience Museum stopover is currently its only Asian venue planned

Visitors to ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands come February 17, 2011 will be able to enjoy the largest collection of Genghis Khan artifacts ever assembled. Genghis Khan: The Exhibition, one of the opening shows at the world’s first ArtScience museum, will boast over 200 rare authentic treasures from the conqueror’s reign. This is the first time that this extensive exhibition will be on show in Asia and its ArtScience Museum stopover is currently its only Asian venue planned.

Genghis Khan: The Exhibition will take visitors on a journey back to 13th century Mongolia. They will experience stunning re-creations of Mongolia’s grasslands and battlegrounds, and walk among the archaeological artifacts and weaponry of the Mongol Empire. The 1,500-square meter exhibition will tell the story of the legendary conqueror whose innovation, technological mastery and cultural creativity gave him the reputation of one of the world’s greatest yet most misunderstood leaders.

Tom Zaller, Director, ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, said, “We are proud to present to audiences in Singapore for the first time such a compelling, one-of-a-kind exhibition that will appeal to visitors of all ages. They will be able to touch, see and even smell scenes of Mongolian life and develop a deeper understanding of Genghis’ time. In addition to an educational component, Genghis Khan: The Exhibition will shed light on the influence that the Mongol empire had on culture, international law and finance even to this day.”

Exhibition visitors can look forward to dazzling sets, videos and activities, including role-playing and excavations. They can walk through a life-size “ger” – the traditional nomadic dwelling, marvel at gold jewelry and ornaments, and use interactive computer touchscreens to follow characters from Khan’s empire. Visitors can also witness fearsome weapons in action with live demonstrations. A highlight of the exhibition is the mummy of a Mongolian aristocrat as well as the clothes and artifacts found buried with her.

Genghis Khan: The Exhibition will be on show from 17 February till 10 April 2011. It is organized by Don Lessem, president of Exhibits Rex, Inc., with curatorial consultation by leading Genghis Khan experts: Dr. William Fitzhugh (the Smithsonian Institution); Dr. Morris Rossabi (Columbia University); and Dr William Honeychurch (Yale University) in cooperation with the Mongolian Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
