Man Sentenced To 17 Years In Prison For Killing Mongolian Woman
GWANGJU, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- A 34-year-old South Korean man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for killing his Mongolian wife's friend and injuring her husband during a quarrel, Yonhap news agency cited court officials as saying on Friday.
The man, identified only by his surname Yang, stabbed the 25-year-old Mongolian woman to death and wounded her husband in September last year, when he went to their house to find his wife who had left him after months of abuse.
"Yang had prepared the deadly weapon in advance and killed the victim and wounded her husband who was trying to end the quarrel," the Gwangju District Court said in a ruling.
"The sentence was determined in consideration of the seriousness of the crime and bereaved families who have not forgiven the defendant."
The victim had come to South Korea in March 2009.
She was from the same village in Mongolia as the defendant's wife, who came into the country six months later.
The incident caused a public stir at the time amid concerns over increasing reports of domestic violence and human trafficking in international marriages between South Korean men and Southeast Asian women.
Three months ago, a Korean husband was sentenced to a 12-year prison term for killing his 20-year-old Vietnamese bride.
