MPP caucus discusses budget, pensions, elections

The MPP caucus discussed several draft laws on Monday. It approved for further discussion draft laws on Government responsibilities, on local settlement elections submitted by 11 MPs headed by D.Lundeejantsan, and on elimination of a pension discrepancy. But members decided to revise a draft law on basic pensions submitted by the Government.

MPP caucus chairman U.Enkhtuvshin told journalists about meeting. He said salaries and pensions could be increased without revising the budget because the increases were to take effect February 1. He also said the draft law on Government responsibilities does not violate the law on the budget or the Constitution.

U.Enkhtuvshin also said there would be numerous challenges if the parliamentary and local settlement elections were held at the same time. For example, he said it would be difficult to confirm the results of elections for Parliament, aimags, soums, administration units, and Ulaanbaatar districts all at once. He said holding the elections simultaneously would also pose technical problems, and could overburden election officials.

Therefore, the caucus approved further discussion of the draft law on local settlement elections.
