COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES' TROIKA RELEASES STATEMENT
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ Last week, the Troika of the Community of Democracies expresses concern about the increasing crackdown on civil society in Egypt. The most recent actions of the ruling military government endanger a peaceful transformation to a democratic state.
The Troika of the Community of Democracies calls on the Egyptian authorities to refrain from the use of physical force against civilians and instead to invest in the building of a vibrant civil society, and to create necessary conditions for their full participation in this decisive time of change for Egypt.
The Mongolian Presidency stresses the importance of education for democracy and considers full and unrestrained civic participation in the construction of a democratic state as an essential element towards a successful transformation. Acts of suppression on civil society at the time of birth of civic identity violate universal human rights and constitute a serious threat to Egypt's transformation.
