Mongolia holds international conference on food safety

ULAN BATOR, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia and the International Finance Corporation conducted a conference Thursday aimed at improving the country's food safety system.

Officials and experts from Lithuania, Britain, China, Serbia, the IFS and WHO discussed, among other topics, food safety controls and regulations.

Xing Pian, deputy director of China's Food Safety Department of the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, introduced the "Four in One" food safety management system in China.

Xing said China's current food safety supervision and management system is characterized with "coordinated operation and subsection regulation."

Graham Jokes, a British specialist on food safety and environmental health, discussed Great Britain's experiences in maintaining food safety.

Jokes emphasized the importance of the Food Standard Agency, an independent government department that is responsible for ensuring that disease does not enter into the food chain.

Public health in Mongolia is threatened by mining activities and environmental damage. Water quality and sanitation are also problems facing the country.
