Invaders to rock Hobart
GET ready to rock Genghis Khan-style Hanggai have hit Hobart to conquer this year's MONA FOMA festival.
Dressed like the infamous 13th-century invader but inspired by modern bands such as Pink Floyd and Radiohead, Hanggai are at the forefront of China's progressive music scene, thanks to the unique spin they put on traditional Mongolian folk music.
All hailing from either Mongolia or Beijing, the members of Hanggai incorporate elements of modern Western genres such as punk rock into their music, which is played on folk instruments including the morin khuur (horsehair fiddle) and the tobshuur (two-stringed lute), topped off with rumbling throat-singing that has to be heard to be believed.
Tasmanians have a chance to hear Hanggai tomorrow night when MOFO 2012 starts at 6pm with a free street party on the corner of Elizabeth St and Melville St.
The event also features German banjo player The Dad Horse Experience, experimental vocalist Lucas Abela, "didgeridoo drum 'n' bass" act eMDee and New Orleans street band Tuba Skinny, plus a laser light installation by Robin Fox.
