'Sandman' shapes his creations

FROM Dubai to Glenvale, Dennis Massoud has sculptured amazing sand creations the world over.

“The Sandman” is in Toowoomba this week shaping silica into incredibly lifelike shapes to the wonderment of Toowoomba Royal Show patrons.

Mr Massoud grew up in Noosa, crafting his skills on the picturesque beaches of the Sunshine Coast.

It has been his full-time job for the past 18 years and has taken him around the world nine times in the past seven years.

His resume includes working with a team of sculptors in the Mongolia’s Gobi Desert where they shaped 60,000 tonnes of sand into icons like Mount Rushmore, The Great Pyramid and the Chinese terracotta warriors

He has sculpted sand for sheiks in Abu Dhabi and has been invited to put on a show at the eight-star Emirates Palace Hotel when he finishes in Toowoomba.

However, he said yesterday he was enjoying his time at the Toowoomba Show.

“It’s fun here,” Mr Massoud said as he wet down a load of sand.

“You don’t have to worry about scratching the marble floors.”

Mr Massoud said the best sculpting sand needed to be able to hold water so it did not dry out too quickly.

“It needs a little bit of silt in it.”

He will be running free workshops today and tomorrow from about 12.30pm to show people the secrets of his craft.

“They are always amazed and they are even more amazed when they realise they can do it themselves.

“It brings families together because they go to the beach and have something to do together.”
