Surface water to be collected in lake to be dug in Mongolia

The Standing Committee on Nature, Environment, Food and Agriculture yesterday discussed a proposal to bring some areas under special conservation protection.

Minister for Nature, Environment and Tourism L.Gansukh noted that the water level in the Tuul, the river that supplies drinking water to Ulaanbaatar, has been going down in recent years and this calls for corrective measures

The volume of water in the river may soon become too little to supply the required 130,000 cubic meters daily used in Ulaanbaatar.

Besides, the river is polluted by effluents from mining and leather processing factories.

When members suggested moving them, Gansukh said the Ministry has suggested closing down all units that did not treat their waste water, but only the State Specialized Inspecting Agency and the Mineral Resources Authority have the right to cancel licenses and they have not taken the extreme step.

The Ministry will soon start work on a project with a company of South Korea to dig an artificial lake to collect surface water, from melting snow and rainfall. Only 5% of the water thus collected could meet the total demand of Ulaanbaatar.
