Ban on issuance of mining exploration licenses extended
Parliament passed a law on the last day of the Autumn session last week, extending the ban on issuance of new mining exploration license.
The law was initiated by President Ts. Elbegdorj and sought extension until July 15, 2011 but MPs settled for April 30.
The Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia issued about 4,000 exploration and 1,000 mining licenses since 1990s. Mongolian civic groups demanded stricter regulation in mining activities citing environmental degradation. Under public pressure, the Mongolian government is cracking down on illegal mining operations. Parliament is expected to debate stricter law on issuance and transfer of mining and exploration licenses in the next session.
