Govt to boost trade-ties with Mongolia
The federal government wants to boost ties with the resource-rich Mongolia.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced we'd be opening a trade mission in the Central Asian state.
The purpose is to foster economic relations, that is focussed mainly on our agricultural and mining companies.
Australia already has about 30 companies operating there.
One of the newest and biggest investments is Rio Tinto's Oyu Tolgoi site, a joint venture with Canada's Invahoe Mines.
The Mongolian Prime Minister has taken a keen interest in this investment, and says any changes to the ownership structure, especially which might see increased Chinese interest, would need his government's approval.
But foremost, he wants to provide a good balance between the interests of Mongolia, and those of foreign investors.
