Mongolian Spy Boss 'Tricked' Into UK Visit, Then Arrested
Mongolia's spy chief claimed he was tricked into visiting the UK so he could be arrested at the request of German authorities for alleged kidnapping offenses.
Bat Khurts was due to appear Wednesday at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court to fight extradition from the UK.
He was arrested at Heathrow over claims he was involved in the kidnapping of a Mongolian refugee suspected of murdering a government minister.
Khurts, the head of the executive office of Mongolia's National Security Council, claimed he was tricked into making an official visit to the UK to meet senior Downing Street officials for talks about Muslim fundamentalism in September last year.
Instead, he was arrested at Heathrow and has spent the past four months in prison.
Duncan MacDonald, his lawyer, accused the UK's Foreign Office of "duplicitously luring Mr. Khurts to his arrest and imprisonment at the behest of the German government."
Khurts said the UK issued a visa for the visit knowing that there was a European Arrest Warrant against him that dated back to 2003, of which he was unaware.
The warrant related to the kidnap, false imprisonment and repatriation of Damiran Enkhbat, who was wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of Zorig Sanjassuren, the Mongolian infrastructure minister, in 1998.
