Standing Committee discusses proposed budget
The Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy discussed the proposed 2012 general budget for the second time on Wednesday.
Members decided to deliver their suggestions and opinions on the proposed budget, as well as on the social insurance and Human Development funds, to the Standing Committee on Budget.
Z.Enkhbold noted that the proposed budget includes many large expenses. As an example, he cited MNT 150 billion allocated to construct a new office building for aimag officials in Uvurkhangai aimag. Enkhbold said some other aimags also have budget allocations in the same amount to build new offices. He suggested budget allocations to aimags should be directed toward economic development and not the construction of new office buildings.
Some MPs also criticized the allocation to Umnugobi aimag, which they said amounted to too much capital from the state budget.
Members approved the suggestion that money be allocated to building schools, kindergartens, and hospitals. Members also approved some spending increases for the nuclear energy sector, defense and peacekeeping activities, and foreign affairs.
A working group was established to explore the cost of buying new embassy buildings in Japan and Belgium. The working group will report its findings to the committee and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Some members criticized the amount of money spent for diplomats’ housing abroad, and suggested finding more economical alternatives.
