N.Tsolmon: Now we can detect suspicious object in our laboratory without crushing

Mongolian one and only laboratory to detect drug is in Mongolian Customs Organization. Not many people know about this lab, therefore to ask more about this, the Chief of the Central Laboratory of Customs N.Tsolmon gave us more information.

-Mongolian Customs Organization has modern equipment, which is used in Japan as well. When was this laboratory introduced in Mongolia?

-This one and only laboratory examines drugs in Mongolia is in our organization. Japan has the biggest laboratory in the world. Therefore, that laboratory in Japan solves the disagreement between certain state and customs. The laboratory was installed on the as part of a 2002 project of the Asian Development Bank.

Before we have this laboratory, we needed to crush the object in order to detect and investigate it. But now we can detect the suspicious object without crushing or breaking. For example, one man had a big snuffbox, and kept saying it is made out of gold. Although it obviously looked to be made out of brass, he insisted it was a golden snuffbox. So we had to detect it in the laboratory and it was made out of brass. This laboratory gives us so much and saves time. This can also prevent people from keeping fake gold.

-In rural areas, laboratory between customs organization and rural areas were established. Where are the branches located?

-In 2007, the Mongolian Customs Organization established branch laboratories in Zamiin-Uud, Altanbulag, and Tsagaannuur. By doing this, customs in Zamiin-Uud can detect suspicious objects in the area without losing time to transfer them to here in Ulaanbaatar. Experts from World Customs Organization came to Mongolia to work. We select our workers in the laboratory by holding open selection. Chemists who received Masters degree in China, Japan, South Korea and Russia work in our laboratory. We send our experts to gain experience in Japanese international customs organizations.
