Y.AMANO:MONGOLIA MAY HELP SET UP NUCLEAR WEAPON-FREE STATUS IN MIDDLE EAST
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr. Yukia Amano has appreciated measures taken by Mongolia for a development of its nuclear weapon free status and asked Mongolia to share the experience. It was sounded at a meeting on establishing a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East kicked off on November 21 in Vienna, Austria.
Initiated by the IAEA Director-General, the two-day meeting has convened representatives of the nuclear weapon-free zone countries, the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for the Accounting and Control of Nuclear Material (ABACC), the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC) and the IAEA members.
Mr. Amano pointed out that building the nuclear weapon-free status in the Middle East is important in strengthening the global peace and security. He added the experience of Latin America, Africa, southern part of Pacific region, Southeast and Central Asia might help setting up the status in the Middle East.
At the meeting, the representatives of the nuclear weapon-free status countries, as well as the IAEA members, expressed opinions on the matter. A special report will be released reflecting proposals and opinions from the meeting, and it will be presented to the IAEA General Conference and other related organizations.
