Thailand, Mongolia strengthen ties

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is on an official visit to Mongolia, partly to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations. Ms Yingluck led the Thai delegation to discuss bilateral cooperation with Mongolian Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag.

Suranand Vejjajiva, the secretary-general to the Prime Minister's Office, said ina note on the Yingluck Shinawatra Facebook page that the consultation between the two prime ministers has opened a new chapter of bilateral relations to promote the development and exchange of knowledge. This will also open investment opportunities for the Thai private sector in mining, energy, automobiles, tourism, public health and agriculture.

In order to promote the investment, Thailand is ready to sign an agreement to promote and protect investment that will become a mechanism to boost bilateral trade and investment in order to double two-way trade from US$13.69 million in 2012 over the next three years.

He said Thailand can help support Mongolia on vehicles, especially light pickup trucks, for the mining industry and machinery for agriculture.

The two countries have had a tourism agreement since 2006 but the number of tourists was still low, so there will be promotions on health tourism, while the Thai private sector is encouraged to investment in tourism industries such as hotels, camping facilities and restaurants.

Both premiers witnessed the signing of three cooperation pacts including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of a consultative body on bilateral cooperation; an agreement on science and technology cooperation on knowledge exchange in the fields of food, biotechnology, electronics and computers, innovation and pharmaceuticals; an MoU between the private sectors of both countries on economic, trade, investment and climate cooperation.
