Mongolia listed among top ten uranium rich countries
French miner Areva’s subsidiary, Areva Mongol, announced last week that it has discovered a 54,000 ton uranium deposit in Zuuvch Ovoo. According to Areva, this finding doubles Mongolia’s currently estimated uranium deposit, placing the country among the top ten uranium rich countries in the world.
The company claims there has not been a discovery of a uranium deposit this big in 20 years.
Areva Mongol reportedly discovered a deposit of more than 9,600 tons of uranium at their Dulaan Uul mine two years ago.
Areva has been active in Mongolia since 2006, providing technical support collaboration for the exploration and mining of uranium. Areva’s activity is centered on the Gobi Desert region, specifically Dornogovi Province, in the southeast of the country. This huge sedimentary basin contains the promising deposit of Dulaan Uul (“hot mountain” in Mongolian), a site reportedly particularly well-suited to in situ recovery (ISR) mining technology. Areva Mongol has 28 exploration licenses covering an area of over 14,100 kilometers.
