Mongolia’s wind project bags US Treasury award

A renewable energy project in Mongolia has won a prestigious US Treasury gong.

The 50MW Salkhit wind farm – which supplies nearly 5% of the nation’s electricity needs – was one of the six projects chosen for the Development Impact Honors award.

Due to Mongolia’s heavy reliance on coal-fired power plants, its capital Ulaanbaatar is one of the most polluted cities on earth, according to the US Treasury.

Launched with the help of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Salkhit project introduced wind-generated renewable energy in Mongolio for the first time to help the capital improve its “health-threatening air quality”.

US Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew said: “When you consider recent global events, it is clear that we must continue to support international financial institutions like those that we are honouring today.”

The Mongolian Government aims to generate 25% of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
