MP R.Gonchigdorj is now Deputy Speaker
During the plenary session meeting of the Parliament held on Friday, the issue to elect the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament was brought onto the discussion table.
Accordingly, member of the Parliament R.Gonchigdorj was promoted to the position of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament. In compliance with the poll result, conducted among the members of the Parliament to re-elect the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, R.Gonchigdorj won the position by getting 51.7 percent of the votes of the meeting attendees, reported the Press, Media, and Public Communications Department of the Parliament.
The Parliament of Mongolia operates with three Deputy Speakers or the Vice-Chairmen of the State Great Khural (Parliament): M.Enkhbold, L.Tsog, and now R.Gonchigdorj.
The former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament S.Bayartsogt was dismissed from the position in late April due to his failure of including a then secret Swiss bank account and offshore company in his income declaration.
New Deputy Speaker of the Parliament R.Gonchigdorj graduated from the National University of Mongolia as a mathematician. He started his early political career in 1990 as a member and the Chairman of the Lower House of the Parliament. R.Gonchigdorj was in the Parliament from 1992 to 2000 while he was in charge of the Social Democrat Party. In 2000, he became the Speaker of the Parliament. In 2012, he was elected for the 6th time as a member of the Parliament.
According to the official website of the Parliament of Mongolia, the Deputy Speaker or the Vice-Chairman of the State Great Khural shall exercise the following tasks and duties:
-To coordinate activities of the standing, temporary, sub committees and caucuses;
-To ensure attendance in plenary sessions and Standing Committee sittings;
-To scrutinize the State Great Khural’s procedures and compliance of ethics codes of the members;
-To exercise other tasks and duties specified in the relevant laws and regulations; and
-To temporarily exercise chairmanship’s tasks, by the assignment of the incumbent Chairman of the State Great Khural during his or her absence.
