Immigration authorities arrest 44 in Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) — Immigration authorities say they arrested 44 men in the Chicago area during a recent five-day operation.

Most of those arrested have convictions for drug-connected crimes, burglary and fraud. Others targeted for arrest were previous deportees who re-entered the United States illegally, which is a felony offense.

Those arrested are from Mexico, Poland, Guatemala, the Philippines, Mongolia and Slovakia.

The arrests are part of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency's efforts to remove criminal aliens and flagrant immigration law violators from the country.

Ricardo Wong of the immigration enforcement agency says arresting and removing convicted criminal aliens can "immediately improve the safety of our communities."

Those arrested include a 24-year-old Mexican national previously convicted of burglary and a 43-year-old a Polish national previously convicted of a drug crime.
