Thorney man’s update from trip-of-a-lifetime to Mongolia
A man from Thorney has sent an update on his charity drive to Mongolia.
Ben Knight (25), from Ash Close, Thorney, has reached Georgia on his Mongol Rally 2012 journey with three friends from Millward Brown.
Their £750 Peugeot 206 Estate, which was revamped for free by Eye Car Care, is one of around 400 cars from the UK travelling on the route between July and the end of August.
Talking to the Peterborough Telegraph on Thursday, Ben said: “We have travelled over 3,000 miles so far.
“We have seen some amazing sites from the Transalpina Highway in Romania to Ramadan in Sultanamet Square, Istanbul.
“The car is holding up thanks to the work put in by Eye Car Care.
“We are especially impressed given the intense heat and extremely long distances we’ve travelled.
“On top of that the camping gear provided by Trek Kits of Oundle has been invaluable so far.
“It has helped up out a few times when we’ve had to rough camp besides random roads after putting in some 15 hour driving stints.”
Eye Car Care and the Sign Team, in Thorney, have helped transform the Peugeot 206 into a brand spanking new vehicle that even includes a cartoon drawing of the four brave souls undertaking the mission.
They set off on Friday, July 13, and will travel through 17 countries (including two ferry trips) before arriving in Mongolia.
Ben added: “Having now arrived in Georgia, we’re really getting a sense now that the easy part is over.
“Road etiquette is increasingly lacking as are the lack of actual roads.
“Next stop is the Caspian sea ferry and then on pure wilderness.
“From now on car reliability and the camping gear are going to be used more and more and therefore once again a big thanks goes out to the eye care care and trek kits teams.”
Ben’s car will be collecting donations for Cancer Research UK, Unicef and the Lotus Childrens Charity - a cause that helps Mongolian youngsters.
They will also leave the car in the Asian country once they finish the challenge.
