Canada advances to bronze-medal match at women's World Cup wrestling
The Canadian women's wrestling team advanced to the bronze-medal match at the 2012 FILA Women's World Cup, beating Mongolia and Azerbaijan before falling to Russia on Saturday.
Canada opened competition in Pool B with a 4-3 win over Mongolia. Calgary's Carol Huynh, Tonya Verbeek of Grimsby, Ont., Michelle Fazzari of St. Catharines, Ont., and Calgary's Leah Callahan all won their matches to secure Canada's victory.
Canada's next match was a 5-2 win over Azerbaijan with wins from Verbeek, Fazzari, Callahan, Jessica MacDonald of St. Catharines and Calgary's Justine Bouchard. Huynh withdrew after her opening win and forfeited her second-round match.
Canada missed out on a berth in the gold-medal match after falling 6-1 to powerhouse Russia. Fazzari was the only Canadian to get a win against the Russians.
Canada will face China for the bronze medal on Sunday. China finished second in Pool A.
