Parliament approves draft law on human rights
Parliament on February 3 approved a draft law on human rights submitted by Kh.Temuujin. The measure now goes to the Standing Committee on Justice for further discussion.
MPs agreed that the human rights situation in the state could be improved, and noted that the structure of legal organizations and the authority of the courts should be reformed. They also suggested creating laws banning human rights violations by courts, police, and other law-enforcement agencies.
D.Davaasuren said human rights have been violated in recent years, such as the events of July 1, 2008. Five people were killed in that incident but the Government has not prosecuted the guilty parties. He noted that Parliament should pay attention to the issue.
He also asked the chairman of the Standing Committee on Justice, D.Odbayar, about information that two Mongolians died in the Oyutolgoi mining project, noting that the Government should protect its citizens. D.Odbayar said police have not yet informed the committee of the deaths.
