Mongolia halts railway operations over diesel shortage
ULAN BATOR, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's Ulaanbaatar Railway has suspended most of the travel operations due to severe diesel shortage, local media reported on Friday.
A total of 11 freight trains and four passenger trains have been suspended, according to the report, which quoted an official from Ulaanbaatar Railways as saying that the company tried to save fuel by suspending routes with low demand.
The official said the situation would be improved as fuel imports from Russia and China arrived.
The Ulaanbaatar Railway, operator of the country's only railroad, is jointly owned by the Mongolian government and Russia's state-owned company Russia Railways.
As Mongolia has no oil refining industry, 90 percent of its consumed petroleum products are imported from Russia. But domestic supply crisis has compelled Russia to significantly reduce fuel exports, which resulted in the diesel shortage in Mongolia.
