DisneyWorld Theme park to open in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Disney World has just announced the location of their new theme park, it is going to be located in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar.
While Ulaanbaatar is not necessarily an obvious choice for a new Disneyland resort, the head of Disney Corporation Asia, Andrew Kam, is quoted in the Press Release as saying: "Ulaanbaatar is strategically located in the epicentre of our growing North Asian Market, it is close and convenient for our customers from Korea, Eastern Russia, Northern China and Taiwain to enjoy the magic of Disney, it might even open up new markets from the CIS countries".
The decision to establish the new park on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar was a difficult one but the Government of Mongolia, keen to co-operate with DisneyWorld has given the american corporation the rights to develop on top of the existing Chinggis Khaan International airport. Mr Aptbaatar, Investment director of FIFTA recently said: “Bringing Disney world to Mongolia is an important step in the development of Mongolia, it will increase tourism from our neighbouring countries while providing employment and investments to the Ulaanbaatar community. Importantly it will also place Mongolia on the map for family vacations and let more people discover the incredible beauty of our country”.
The new park is set to start construction in late 2012 as the airport relocates to its new location, slightly further away from Ulaanbaatar. The opening date is currently tentatively set for Q1 of 2015. This location is idea for Disney World as it is close to the city ( a 20 minute drive) yet at the doorsteps to the endless Mongolian Steppes and close to the new transport links to the new Ulaanbaatar international airport. It is also the only large constructible plot of land near the city centre of Ulaanbaatar. The recent news that MIAT will purchase and operate 5 Concorde in the near future has only reinforced Disney’s decision to establish a hub in Ulaanbaatar. As the income per capita of the Mongolian population skyrockets, thanks in part to the country’s mining boom and with the young demographics of the country, Mongolia becomes an increasingly attractive real estate and property investment and shopping destination for neighbouring countries.
Mr Kam states that he is thrilled of launching this new venture in Mongolia as it signifies a shift in the global strategy of DisneyWorld to “bring Disneyworld to upcoming high growth emerging markets, thus letting entire new generations of customers grow up with the joys of Disney in their lives”. He then went on to add that “The Mongolia Disneyworld Park will be the first of a new generation of parks, smaller, more efficient and more cost effective than our current range of Disneyworld Parks, it will never the less be as exciting and fun for all our patrons as our larger parks”. Other Disney World locations currently in discussions are thought to include Hanoi, Kinshasa, Columbo and Muscat. Pyongyang was recently ruled out as Kim Jong Ill refused access to Disney world after his “disappointing trip to DisneyWorld Hong Kong, where he found Mickey Mouse to be too much an imperialist pig and not enough of a socialist worker”. It is hoped that this new strategy will allow the brand to rejuvenate itself in an increasingly complex and competitive world. Disney World Corporation will soon open a representative office in Ulaanbaatar and start recruiting personnel for the construction and management of its upcoming park.
