Premier: Campaign for reclaiming virgin lands is fruitful

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The Prime Minister, head of the national council for the "Third Campaign for Reclaiming Virgin Lands" agrarian development program S.Batbold gave a speech at the national council's meeting held Monday in the Government House.

The Premier has said Mongolia is able to provide its people with potatoes with 100 per cent, and vegetables--with 53.7 per cent, from home territories. He has added it is time to pay an attention to food safety and quality in ways of developing both animal husbandry and land farm, of improving quality, sizes and safety of food supply, introducing the latest technologies.

Mongolia is going to implement a national program called "Guarantee of food safety", the next of the Third campaign for reclaiming virgin lands, aiming to provide people with safe and high quality foods through supporting a participation of state, private sector and the public, improving people's health and labor productivity, reducing poverty and unemployment, promoting an economic sustainable growth. In order to realize them, several works are planned that are to support rural development.

The Third campaign has been initiated by a former Prime Minister S.Bayar with a purpose to revive the land farming sector that was in fall for a decade. Thanks to the campaign, various renovation has been made in legal, economic and technical-technological spheres, and, moreover, a real opportunity has been created to provide the people with safe foods.

In frames of the Third campaign, Mongolia has harvested 366.3 thousand tons of grain (of them 344.5 thousand tons are wheat), 169 thousand tons potatoes, 90.3 thousand tons vegetables, five thousand tons barley, 3.1 thousand tons oat, 538 tons rye, 12.9 thousand tons oil vegetables, 205 tons buckwheat, and 38.9 thousand tons fodder vegetables.

In addition, ploughed lands have been prepared in high quality on 276.2 thousand hectares with an increase of 7.4 thousand hectares against the previous year.

Some six thousand mechanics experts and vegetable growers have been employed in a scope of the campaign.
