MONGOLIA SIGNS ARMS TRADE TREATY
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ During the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mongolia's Minister of Foreign Affairs L.Bold September 24 signed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, at the Treaty Events in New York, USA.
The UN General Assembly adopted this April 2 the landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), regulating the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. This treaty will foster peace and security by putting a stop to destabilizing arms flows to conflict regions. It will prevent human rights abusers and violators of the law of war from being supplied with arms and will help keep warlords, pirates, and gangs from acquiring these deadly tools.
Mongolia joined the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 2002, this time Mongolia signed this Convention’s optional protocol which imposes a duty upon its participants to set up their national body on prevention of torture.
Mongolia became the 86th and 80th state to sign the ATT and the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, respectively.
