35,000 hectares of crop fields covered with snow
A moderate amount of snow fell on mountains in Selenge, Khuvsgul, Khentii, Orkhon and Darkhan-Uul provinces, while 35,000 hectares of crop fields in Tseel, Jargalant, and Bornuur soums of Tuv Province, and Orkhon Tuul, Khushaat, and Saikhan soums of Selenge Province, were covered in 15 cm of snow. Tuvshruuleh soum of Arkhangai Province and Kharkhorin soum of Uvurkhangai Province experienced 10 cm of snow. These areas encompass 3,061 hectares of crop fields.
Below is a short interview with M.Ariunbold, senior expert of APIRA, regarding the issue.
-How are crop conditions in provinces?
-Crop fields in provinces experienced rain and snow in mountainous areas last weekend. The crop farmers reported that 35,000 hectares of field were covered by snow that is melting now. Harvesting will resume today (September 24). When snow starts falling, the herders move to their fall camp sites, which are mostly crop fields. Unless harvesting is completed quickly, livestock might ruin the crop.
-What risks do harvesters run if heavy snow falls again?
-When the crop is ripe, two snowfalls will not greatly affect it. But it is a problem if the crop isn’t ripe yet. According to the National Agency of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, snow is predicted on September 28 and 29. Thus we are warning harvesters to quickly harvest their crops in time.
-When will the harvesting end?
-Currently, harvesting is at 12.3 percent completion, and in total, 51,000 tons of wheat, 98,000 tons of potato, and 55,000 tons of vegetables have been harvested. Though the harvesting was expected to end within 20 to 25 days, rain and snow delayed the work by one to two days.
