Mongolian unemployment rates are still on the increase
But still represents only about 1.5% of the total population. Despite the mining boom gripping Mongolia, a considerable portion of the population is still unemployed and likely to remain so.
According to a recent report from the Mongolian National Statical Office, the unemployment rates within Mongolia have increased from a low base of 40.000 to over 50.000 citizen’s in the last quarter.
Unemployed are considered to be those people registered at the state employment service institutions who are actively seeking work while claiming benefits. The breakdown of job seekers within Mongolia was reported as being the highest in Ulaanbaatar with 2,297 people, 1,342 in Uvurkhangai prefecture and 1,000 in Khovd prefecture with the remainder spread across the country.
Unemployment rates in the western region of Mongolia are considered to be higher than within the eastern parts of Mongolia due to the growth of region’s mining sector.
It is hoped that with the growth of vocational training institutions and the economy as a whole, the unemployment rates within Mongolia will stabilize if not reduce soon.
