Every student in Mongolia will get MNT 491,960 for tuition

At Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, ministers discussed the annual fee that students in Mongolian universities, institutes, and colleges receive from the Human Development Fund. Our correspondent spoke about the issue with Yo.Otgonbayr, the Minister for Education, Culture and Science.

- Will you tell us what decisions were reached at the meeting?

- The law says the allowance from the Human Development Fund can be granted as non-cash or educational services. Students now receive MNT 500,000 from the fund for tuition. A total of 133,000 students receive that grant, so the Government spends more than MNT 65 billion for that. But the Government has made a commitment to continue these payments next year. A student is supposed to be granted MNT 491,960. The fund also pays for a student’s health insurance.

- How much money will be needed in the budget if every student is granted MNT 491,960?

- Since there will be a number of new students next year, we estimated the cost at MNT 85 billion.

- Will the Government stop granting students the monthly MNT 70,000 stipend? Was that discussed?

- The Government is not discussing this issue. We will address it when the budget is ready. It is not possible to make an announcement about an issue not on the agenda.

- In a few days a new academic year begins. There are many students who have been receiving free tuition. Will this system remain in place?

- The children of state workers and orphans will still receive free tuition in the first four months of the new academic year. And from January 1, every student will receive the MNT 491,960 for tuition.
