Tagaytay chessers near Asian Cities Chess title

MANILA, Philippines -- Tagaytay (Philippines) toppled Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), 2.5-1.5, in the seventh round of the 2013 Asian Cities Chess Team Championship late Thursday in Tagaytay.

Grandmaster (GM) Mark Paragua defeated FM Myagmarsuren Gunbayar on Board 2 to lead Tagaytay to victory after his team mates GMs Oliver Barbosa, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo ended drawing all their games against their Mongolian counterparts.

Barbosa split the point with GM Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa on Board 1, Gomez drew with International Master (IM) Batkhuyag Munguntuul on Board 3 while Laylo halved the point with IM Gombosuren Munkhgal on Board 4.

The win gave Tagaytay 13 points in this nine-round Swiss-system tournament.

The Tagaytay team is scheduled to meet Pasay-Philippine Airforce in the eight and penultimate round on Friday. -- Marlon Bernardino
